About the Course:

Commedia dell' Arte is the first form of professional theatre, originating in Italy, that was popular throughout Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. Featuring masked stock characters representing fixed social types, commedia is improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios known as a lazzi. It is a highly physical, broad form of comedy, influencing subsequent forms of theatre such as bouffon, boulevard farce, and musical theatre.

In this course, students will build on their improv skills with a greater focus on storytelling through movement and collaborating as an ensemble. Through theatre games and exercises, they will develop their speech, enunciation and vocal projection, and begin to understand the basics of physical comedy. Divided into groups, they will be assigned stock characters and given a lazzi to prepare for performance at the end of the term. Students will also learn how to incorporate sets, props, and costumes into their piece, and will make their own character mask. Additionally, they will learn how to work with a director and how to develop collective creations. This is the perfect course for anyone looking to release their creative comedic energy.
